Amtrak received recognition for workplace excellence by earning a spot in Forbes magazine’s first-ever America’s Best Employers 2015. America’s Railroad® is on the list of 500 employers across 25 industries where the workers like their jobs enough to tell others. Listed under the transportation & logistics category, Amtrak was chosen based on Forbes’ independent survey of 20,000 workers throughout the U.S. to see which companies were the best. What makes a company an employer of choice? Over 20,000 employees at companies with at least 2,500 people were surveyed for the America’s Best Employers List. The survey was conducted with global digital data collection partners who use innovative technology and proven sampling methodologies to facilitate a deep understanding of consumer opinions and behavior. Participation in the survey was voluntary, and respondents were recruited from thousands of sources to maximize reach and representation. The mix of respondents (gender, age, region, educational level, and ethnicity) in the sample represents American employees.

In May 2014, Amtrak Human Capital officially embarked on a journey to achieve this internationally recognized quality improvement standard by the end of 2014. Following the stage 2 registrar audit conducted in November, Human Capital has been recommended for ISO certification.

More than just a convenient way to travel, Amtrak is also energy efficient. Traveling by rail contributes less per passenger mile to greenhouse gas emissions than either cars or airplanes. According to U.S. Department of Energy data, Amtrak is almost 14 percent more efficient than domestic airline travel and 31 percent more efficient than auto travel on a per-passenger-mile basis.
